Pain that occurs in the head is known as headache. It is one of the most common medical complaints. It is a common problem and almost everyone has suffered this ailment sometime or the other in life.Although the cause of many headaches is unclear, several potential causes have been identified by researchers that include the dilation of blood vessels or the contraction of muscles.
Your headaches cause can be multiple and very varied. Tension headaches are not some inherited trait that runs in the family. In some people, headaches are caused by food allergies, like to cheese, perfume, or coffee. The symptoms may be tight muscles in the jaw, back of the neck, behind the eyes, and even in the scalp.
Headaches have become a regularly occurring medical condition and at present disrupt the lives of many people across the globe. Almost everyone experiences headaches and migraine attacks - from children to aged men and women. The main headache causes are extreme stress and tension.
Tension headaches, features may include:
- Headache when you wake up
- Aching muscles
- Chronic fatigue
- Impatience and irritability
- Difficulty getting to sleep
- Difficulty staying asleep
Headache Causes
Causes for headaches are often due to reactions of the body to some specific factors. Hormonal changes, uncorrected nearsighted or farsighted vision, dietary factors, sensory stimulus and emotions are some of the common triggers of headaches.
Different headaches have different causes of pain and are diagnosed accordingly. Vascular headaches that include migraines and cluster headaches occur due to dilation or swelling of the blood vessels in the brain. The muscle contraction ones include tension headache that develop due to the result of tightening of muscles in the face, neck or possibly from the restriction of blood flow to the brain.
Chronic headaches are generally different than the regular headaches that hit people. But, just like a regular headache, chronic headaches causes can be as varied as the types of pain that they inflict. They can be a reaction to some kind of allergy, or perhaps brought on by stress or anxiety. It could also be that they are caused by a more serious problem that should be diagnosed by a doctor. Once the underlying cause of the headache is known, it can then be attacked at the source.
Some of them are naturally occurring, such as those that are caused by allergens and the environment around us, and others are created by us in some form or another, either through the use of unnatural products or by our diet. If you find that you are getting headaches frequently, or that you are suffering from even an occasional headache then here are the headaches causes that might have you suffering.
Headaches are common after a head injury (concussion), and it can also be caused by sinus problems or problems involving the lower jaw muscles that may result from teeth grinding.
A sudden, severe headache, like a blow to the back of the head, often followed by unconsciousness, may indicate internal bleeding underneath the brain known as a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

According to the dictionary fad dieting is a reducing diet that enjoys temporary popularity. Fad dieting is a growing problem in today’s society. It is a problem because fad dieting does not help a person to change their bad habits that have occurred over a period time. It simply adds to their frustrations and merely fuels the fire.
There are many fad diets to choose from. Most of them reel you in with the promise of quick weight loss. We lose are rational minds and start a two day diet to lose ten pounds. This leaves us disappointed and probably not feeling very well after the two days. We need to start looking at the dangers of fad dieting. If you really lost ten pounds you would be dehydrated, have an electrolyte imbalance and mineral deficiencies. The promises of fad diets sound to good to be true because they are.
Here are 7 recognizable fad diets that fail miserably at keeping the weight off:
1. The Blood Type Diet
2. The Cabbage Soup Diet
3. South Beach Diet
4. Atkins Diet
5. The Grapefruit Diet
6. The Zone
7. The Hollywood Diet
All these diets are quick, unhealthy and unsustainable weight loss programs. 4 Top reasons why you should avoid Fad Diets:
1. Fad Diets Why Are They Bad? - Quick - Sure you can lose weight quickly, but if you want to keep the weight off, it is not the best idea. Go with a program that will help you lose weight but also KEEP IT OFF.
2. Fad Diets Why Are They Bad? - Unhealthy - Some of the diets wants you to skip meals, this will NOT help you lose weight. This will only slow down your metabolism. You should actually eat 5 healthy smaller meals a day. A lot of the fad diets do not allow you to eat a well balanced diet, grape fruit all day… That is not healthy.
3. Fad Diets Why Are They Bad? - Unsustainable - The majority off the weight you lose with the fad diets will come back in a very short time as soon as you start eating “normal” again. Fad diets produce temporary results.
4. Fad Diets Why Are They Bad? - Do they make you feel good? - Eating should be enjoyable, if your diet prohibits enjoyment it’s a “fad diet”. Nearly all of the fad-diets make people feel irritable and like they have to fallow all these rules and guidelines. Fad diets deplete your body of essential nutrients and vitamins.
Effects of Fad Diets on Health
Fad diets, which promise simple and fast weight loss, occupy eating only one kind of food. It does not give benefits that the balanced diet gives. It is recommended that you take dietary supplements. However, the reality is that the body absorbs lots of supplements if they are taken with the foods that are not permissible in fad diets. And if you stick with fad diets for extended time, you might build up nutritional deficiencies.

There are number of health conditions that could develop owing to infections. Ear infection is one of such infectious condition. Ear infections are referred to as otitis media in medical terminology. In simple words, inflammation of ear (specifically middle ear) is called as ear infection. Ear infection may affect either one ear or both ears. Ear infections are most common amongst children. However, some adults may also experience ear infections.
Causes of Ear Infection
The common Causes of Ear Infection :
* viruses like herpes,
* bacteria such as Staphylococci, or
* fungi such as candida, which causes thrush.
The cause is a germ infecting the outer ear canal. Most often this is caused by bacteria (which can be treated with antibiotics), but sometimes other causes, such as fungus infection, are to blame.
The infection can happen to anyone. Sometimes a cause can be traced, such as swimming in infected sea water (many surfers will attest to this). Most times it is not possible to be sure why it started.
An ear infection may be caused by one or a combination of the following factors. Within the ear are tiny bones which help translate sound waves to the brain. The sound waves travel to these bones through the Eustachian tube, which in children is placed in more of a level position. When liquid is introduced to the ear through swimming or bathing, and if the liquid is not cleaned out by a swab, it may linger there and allow bacteria to fester.
Blockage of Eustachian tube is considered as the main cause behind occurrence of ear infections. Such blockage may be resulted from factors like allergy, cold, accumulation of fluid (due to presence of viruses and bacteria) in the eardrum and infections of upper respiratory system. When the infection is caused as a result of accumulation of pus and mucus, due to viral or bacterial factors, behind the eardrum such a condition is referred to as acute otitis media. Accumulation of fluids in the eardrum leads to swelling, redness and earache.
Ear infections are caused by trapped water, moisture and bacteria growth in the inner ear. This build up in the inner ear irritates the Eustachian tube and causes it to swell. The swelling of the Eustachian tube then puts added pressure on the inner ear and that leads to the aching that we feel. The pressure in the ear constantly builds as water and moisture are not able to drain from the ear through the nose. Alas, the inner ear infection is born.
Treatment:
Generally, antibiotics are prescribed for treating ear infections. In some cases antihistamines and decongestants may be prescribed. Apart from the above medications your physician may prescribe pain relievers (usually ear drops) and other medications to relieve fever. Surgery is recommended rarely, only in cases where infections do not respond the medications.
Other than these suggestions, there are only a few ways to rid yourself of an ear infection after getting it. If you’re already experiencing the pains from an ear infection, go to your local doctor for antibiotics.

Amblyopia is what we commonly referred to as lazy eyes and it cannot be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses. Amblyopia is caused when the brain uses one eye more than the other. Because one of the eye is not used, clear vision does not develop in that particular eye.
Traditionally Amblyopia has been treated with eye patches and eye drops. For some odd reason ophthalmologists are claiming that Amblyopia is hard to treat after the age of 9 but I find this not to be true. By relieving the strain that is the cause for Amblyopia you can get cured no matter how old or young you are.
What are the causes of amblyopia?
• Any condition that affects normal visual development or use of the eyes
• It can be caused by strabismus
• Amblyopia occurs sometimes when one eye is more nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic than the other eye
• Other eye conditions such as a cataract is sometimes the cause of amblyopia
* Amblyopia can be caused by strabismus or squint eyes. It is an imbalance in the positioning of the two eyes. The eyes can cross in (esotropia) or turn out (exotropia). The child uses only the better eye for vision as the crossed eye turns off to avoid “double vision” and resulting in the crossed eye failing to develop good vision.
* Unequal focus can cause amblyopia. Unequal focus is a condition where one eye is more nearsighted or farsighted than the other eye. This can be corrected by the wearing spectacles.
* Cataract may lead to poor vision. Cataract is a disease there is clouding of the clear lens in the eye. Treatment is necessary to remove the cataract.
Treatment:
The most common treatment for amblyopia is an eye patch. The better-seeing eye is covered, forcing the “lazy” one to work, thereby strengthening its vision. Alternatively, the better-seeing eye may be treated with atropine eyedrops to blur its vision, but this approach does not usually achieve success as quickly as patching the eye. To avoid permanent loss of sight in the “lazy” eye, treatment usually must begin by age 10.
Another Amblyopia treatment is to use eye drops or glasses to blur the vision of the dominant eye. This has the same effect as the eye patch treatment but doesn’t need you to use a eye patch. This form of treatment is also called penalization and it works best in persons who have mild Amblyopia. This is a treatment that may suit adults better, as going around with a eye patch might trigger some pirate jokes from relatives and co-workers.
Vision therapy is highly successful in improving a lazy eye. Therapy corrects not only the lazy eye, but it also corrects the brain’s inability to align and use both eyes together. During therapy, the patient’s brain is trained to stop suppressing the lazy eye, the visual pathways from brain to eyes are improved so the patient can keep both eyes aligned, and finally the brain is taught to fuse the images coming in from both eyes for normal vision.

Vitiligo is a specific type of leukoderma and it is characterized by depigmentation of the epidermis. It affects at least one in every hundred people in countries throughout the world including the UK. It affects people of both sexes equally, and it affects all races. It can begin at any age, though about fifty percent of people with vitiligo develop it before the age of twenty five. Vitiligo affects 1-2% of the American population.
How Does Vitiligo Develop And Progress?
Vitiligo can develop on any part of the body, at any age and in anyone. Though it is believed that exposed parts of body have higher chances of developing Vitiligo, it can appear anywhere. Color of skin does not affect the probability of getting vitiligo. Similarly, it can strike both the sexes and at any age. It is estimated that in about one-fifth of the cases, other family members may also have vitiligo. As vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder, its patients are monitored for other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disorders, alopecia aerta, etc. You should talk to your doctor about this in detail.
How is Vitiligo most easily recognized?
The white patches of skin often develop in certain recognizable patterns:
1. The Focal Pattern is where blotches of white skin appear in small limited areas
2. The Segmental Pattern is where patches of white skin appear on one side of the body only
3. The Generalized Pattern is where the areas of pigmentation disorder appear on many and various parts of the body
Parts of the body often affected are around the mouth, eyes and nose, as well as the underarms and also the genital areas.
The symptoms:
People with vitiligo develop white patches on their skin of irregular shapes and sizes. Vitiligo is more common on the exposed areas, for example, hands, face, neck and arms. It also occurs on covered areas too like genitals, breast and legs. In some patients, the hair may also turn grey early and in the inside of the mouth, white discoloration may occur.
The spread of vitiligo cannot be determined. It may stop completely after the first patch, but often these patches do spread. For some patients, further development may take years and for others the large areas can be covered in months. In some patients, mental stress has been seen to increase the growth of these white patches.
The manifestation of vitiligo’s effects on a patient’s body is seen not only through the white patches that appear but also through the weakening of the skin’s function. The occurrence of this disorder affects the melanin content of a person’s skin, thus making him more prone to the damaging effects of the sun.
The first option is the medical therapies. When started early, topical steroid therapy helps a great deal in repigmenting the skin meaning returning the color to those white patches that have spread around the body. Doctors advice the patients to apply corticosteroids, which are a group of drugs that resemble the hormones produced by the adrenal gland. Results usually manifest after two to three months of application, taking note this is not a therapy to cure vitiligo but a treatment that can help.

Most people with a phobia are normal, happy, intelligent and well-balanced.They have just got this phobia, this thing they feel powerless to do anything to change. So it’s very frustrating because a part of them (the rational thinking part) knows that it doesn’t make sense, that they are okay and probably quite safe with that thing or in that situation. But they nevertheless find that when they are exposed to that thing or situation, or even just thinking about it, another part of them (the irrational unconscious part) drives out rational thought and anxiety and panic floods in.
Types of Phobias
Phobias belong to a large group of mental problems known as anxiety disorders that include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Social phobia and situational phobias, such as fear of heights or of closed-in spaces, typically appear by the mid-20s.
The causes of complex phobias, such as agoraphobia and social phobia, are unclear. Sometimes phobias run in families. Phobias are persistent, irrational fears of objects or situations that persist even though the fear has no base in current reality.
A phobia is defined as an irrational fear. There are hundreds of them.
Arachnophobia – fear of spiders
Arachibutyrophobia – fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth
Caligynephobia – fear of beautiful women
Hippopotomonstrosesquippeddaliophobia – fear of long words
Ithyphallophobia – fear of seeing an erect penis
Placophobia – fear of tombstones
Trichopathophobia – fear of hair
Triskadekaphobia – fear of the number thirteen
Xerophobia – fear of dryness
Zemmiphobia – fear of the great mole rat
Therapy
One of the most successful is cognitive behavioral therapy which helps people with phobias face up to their fears, control their symptoms and in time accepting of whatever was causing their extreme anxiety. Therapy for anxiety disorders often involves medication or specific forms of psychotherapy. Supportive therapy, such as group therapy, or couple or family therapy, and to educate significant others about the disorder is also helpful.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy helps to reprogram your unconscious minds processes that may be generating your fear. When these processes resolved, people are then free of the symptoms of phobia and fear is minimized. You can overcome fears and phobias on the list of all phobias using hypnosis.
- Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
NLP is basically the study and practice of how we create our reality. From the NLP viewpoint, your fear is the result of your programs or “constructs” that you have created that are outmoded and not functioning as you would like them to.
Meridian and Energy Psychology
Meridian and Energy Psychology is emerging as an excellent therapy for fears and phobias because in studies it is shown to be rapid, safe, effective and long-lasting. Energy Psychology is based on a theory and practice that has been around for a couple of thousand years. Energy Psychology has the same foundation or roots as acupuncture, except in this case there are no needles used.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Cognitive therapy or cognitive behavior therapy is a kind of psychotherapy used to treat depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, and other forms of mental disorder.
It involves recognizing unhelpful patterns of thinking and reacting, then modifying or replacing these with more realistic or helpful ones.

When the words ‘wisdom teeth’ are mentioned, the most common thought is about having them removed. Why is this? Wisdom teeth are also referred to as third molars. This set of molars will start to come through in late adolesence or early adulthood, if they develop at all. As humans have evolved, there is less room in the mouth for these teeth to come in normally, although there are people who are able to keep them.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars and they normally appear after adolescence. Most people have 4 of these teeth, but some have less and some have none at all. The number of wisdom teeth you have is based on genetics, so you may want to ask your parents how many they have and what were their symptoms. There are even rare cases of having more than 4 of these types of teeth.
When there is a wisdom tooth infection the tooth must also be extracted. A wisdom tooth causes infection when it is partially impacted. Impacted teeth are teeth that do not break the surface. If a the tooth only partially breaks the skin, the remaining skin flap can collect bacteria. The resulting infection can be quite serious if left untreated.
It is always advisable to remove a wisdom tooth if it is causing problems. Sometimes antibiotics are used to clear the infection but the cure is only temporary. Hence a permanent cure to it is an operation.
The conduct of the operation is a step by step process. Your surgeon will prepare you for the operation. Smokers are asked to avoid smoking as it may cause after effects. A consent form should be signed. The operation is under anesthesia so that the patient does not feel the pain. The surgeon cuts the jaws and takes out the wisdom teeth. The length of the operation will depend upon the strength of the teeth. Once the operation is over the anesthesia will take some time to wane off and once the person gains consciousness, he may leave. The nurse gives the person some instructions regarding the care of the teeth and gums which needs to be followed strictly.
Below are the most common reasons for removing wisdom teeth.
1. Tooth decay
Saliva, bacteria and food particles can collect around an impacted wisdom tooth, causing it, or the next tooth to decay. It is very difficult to remove such decay. Pain and infection will usually follow.
2. Gum infection
When a wisdom tooth is partially erupted, food and bacteria collect under the gum causing a local infection. This may result in bad breath, pain, swelling and the inability to open your mouth fully. The infection can spread to involve the cheek and neck. Once the initial episode occurs, each subsequent attack becomes more frequent and more severe.
3. Pressure pain
Pain may also come from the pressure of the erupting wisdom tooth against other teeth. In some cases this pressure may cause the erosion of these teeth.
4. Orthodontic reasons
Many younger patients have had prolonged orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth. Wisdom teeth may cause movement of teeth particularly the front teeth when they try to erupt. This will compromise the orthodontic result.

Spinal stenosis can be a pain in the neck, literally! This condition is the result of a gradual narrowing of the spinal canal, which may place pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This most commonly affects the lumbar (low back) and cervical (neck) areas of the spine. The most common cause of spinal stenosis is aging. The rate of progression of the disease varies as people age and the changes are often quite gradual.
Symptoms
The symptoms of spinal stenosis depend on where the narrowing is. Most spinal stenosis affects the lumbar, or lower back, area. You experience pain radiating down your leg that is relieved if you sit or bend forward. In severe cases, you could lose bowel, bladder or sexual function and have difficulty walking.
The second most common area for spinal stenosis to occur is in your neck, or cervical spine. People with cervical stenosis may feel pain radiating down an arm, or aching, numbness or tingling in the arm or leg. They may have difficulty with fine motor skills, such as picking things up with their fingers or writing, problems walking or loss of bladder and bowel control.
Types:
Cervical spinal stenosis occurs in the neck and can involve either the cord or spinal nerves. If spinal nerves are involved, you will have pain, numbness, tingling and/or weakness of the neck, shoulders and/or arms. If the cord is involved, you may also have symptoms affecting your legs, usually uncoordinated movement and difficulty walking.
Thoracic stenosis is rare because there is less curvature in the thoracic spine, and therefore less stress on the joints between vertebrae. The spinal canal is normally narrower in the thoracic spine, however, so it takes less obstruction to cause symptoms.
Lumbar stenosis is common, and involves the lower back. Lumbar stenosis causes pain in the lower back and leg and may also cause weakness in one or both legs.
Diagnosing Spinal Stenosis
• Complete history to determine how long symptoms have been present and if condition is worsening
• Physical Exam to evaluate pain and weakness of extremities
• Neurological exam will identify chronic nerve root depression
• Laboratory tests to rule out unusual causes of nerve root and spinal cord dysfunction
• X-rays of lumbar and cervical spine can identify the amount of spinal degeneration or instability.
• A CAT scan (Computerized axial tomography) helps visualize the spinal column and identifies areas of stenosis.
• A myelogram, in which a dye is injected into the space occupied by the spinal cord and nerve roots, can identify problem areas.
• An EMG (electromyographic) test helps identify compressed nerve roots.
Treatment
Conservative methods of treatment are used as long as possible. They don’t cure the problem, but most people get relief of their symptoms for quite a while by doing prescribed exercises, including flexion. Most people have good results with physical therapy. Chiropractic, massage and acupuncture often help, too.
Most doctors prescribe muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory medications to relieve the symptoms of spinal stenosis. If those don’t work, epidural cortisone treatments and nerve blocks may be helpful.

All pregnant women will agree that the first few months of pregnancy are unpleasant, to say the least. You may experience morning sickness, swelling in the legs and ankles, abdominal pains andcramps, heartburn, constipation, fatigue, bladder problems, and a myriad of problems in between. The goal of this article is to help you deal with these issues and feel better.
Headache commonly occurs in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. You get a dull headache in the entire head with or without the pain at backside of the neck. The exact reason for these headaches is unknown. However, they seem to be related to hormonal changes during pregnancy since they generally get better during second trimester, when your hormonal levels tend to stabilize. Lack of proper night sleep, dehydration, stress, fatigue, sinus congestion or eyestrain might also lead to headaches during pregnancy.
Throughout your pregnancy, you may experience some swelling. Wearing support hose can help to control your weight gain in your legs and ankles. Avoid standing for long periods of time. Wear well-fitting shoes, or buy inserts designed especially for pregnant women. Avoid diuretics, as these will lead to increased swelling. Stay off your feet as much as possible, and elevate your legs when sitting. Lying down is even better than sitting.
Simple Remedies to Prevent and Treat Swelling of Feet during Pregnancy
- Drink a lot of water when you are pregnant. You must drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Water is the most natural therapy to flush out the excess toxins from the body. Thus, the water will expel all the toxic fluids of the body which would otherwise settle in the feet and cause them to swell. Drinking a lot of water could increase the frequency of urination in pregnant women, but that is actually a good sign, as urination is a way to expel the wastes from the body.
- Avoid remaining in a standing position for long periods of time. This gives direct access for the fluids to enter into the lower parts of the body and cause the feet to swell up.
- Hot temperatures are not good during pregnancy. Hot temperatures can reduce the water content of the body, due to which the proportion of the fluids increase proportionately in the body. Therefore, going out when there is a hot climate must be avoided as much as possible.
- It is a misconception that swelling of feet during pregnancy is caused by excessive intake of salty foods. Though over-intake of salt is definitely not good, eliminating salt totally from the diet also does not help. Salt must be taken in moderation. The same idea applies to spicy foods also.
- Keep your diet well-balanced. This is extremely important for a pregnant woman. If the diet is deficient in any kind of food, or if the woman takes the wrong kind of food, then there is more chance of undigested toxic wastes accumulating in the body, and causing the feet to swell.
